Research

The Chair of Non-metallic Materials focuses on innovative processes for the manufacture, characterisation, testing and protection of novel functional and multifunctional materials. It pursues both fundamental and application-oriented approaches to materials development and addresses the following key areas:

  • Ceramic materials
  • X-ray-based material characterisation

To address these key areas, the chairs at the Institute of Materials and Joining Technology have access to state-of-the-art process, preparation, analysis and characterisation methods. In addition, there are numerous collaborations and contacts with institutions both in Germany and abroad.

Laboratory for Materials Characterization

  • Materials analysis using X-ray powder diffraction (Bruker D8 Discover): phase analysis (Rietveld), in situ measurements up to 1400 °C, stress analysis, texture analysis, small-angle scattering
  • Transmission testing using micro-computed tomography, porosity analysis (nanotom s)
  • Confocal Raman microscopy for materials characterization (WITec alpha300R)
  • Thermal analysis (thermogravimetry, heat flux calorimetry, dilatometry)
